“I have the opportunity to lead my first project but I don’t have much experience being the lead. Can you give me some ideas for creating a good project plan?”
Congratulations on your opportunity to manage your first project. Leading a project is an excellent way to hone many of the attributes it takes to be an effective leader, which will boost your career in the future.
The discipline of Project Management includes the following components; Leadership, Resources, Communication, Accountability and a Process. The Process phase and level of detail you have to prepare will depend on the needs of your organization. It is the process phase that we will focus on here. The Process phase includes Initiating, Planning, Execution, Monitoring/Controlling, and Closing.
There are many fine publications available on Project Management. I often recommend Project Failures are Killing Us! (Amazon.com).
